Thesis Title

Characterisation of the relationships between sleep, brain development, and psychopathology in adolescence.

Supervisor

Dr Vanessa Cropley

Research Questions

Does sleep influence brain development? Does this play a role in the development of psychopathology in adolescence, a period of increased risk for developing such symptoms? Does alterations in sleep lead to altered trajectories of brain structural development over time?

Whose research influences you?

Developmental neuroscience and mental health researchers, such as Adrienne Romer, Deanna Barch, BJ Casey, Kate Mills, Sarah-Jayne Blakemore; sleep researchers such as Alice Gregory and Nicola Barcla.

Are you a lived-experience researcher?

Yes

If so, how does lived or consumer experience shape your research?

Having a enduring mental illness, I don’t want anyone to have to experience what I have experienced; the distress and pain that comes with a severe and long-term mental disorder. The core of my research focus is prevention; if the research that I do could prevent even one person from developing a psychiatric illness, then I’ve achieved my goal.
